Each page has four short stories, sixteen in all, and each story hides a number pattern: something added every day, taken away every week, doubled, or halved. Under the story the pattern is laid out step by step with the first two numbers given. Students fill in the rest, write the rule, use the box to show their work, and write the answer with its unit.
Read one story aloud and ask what changes each time and by how much. Students can act out a story or draw it in the work box before filling in the steps.
Read each story together and ask your child to find the two numbers that show the jump. Talk about where patterns like these show up in real life, such as saving money each week.

Four third grade worksheets of number pattern word problems: stickers collected each day, books checked out, a plant growing, a ribbon cut in half. Students fill in the pattern step by step, write the rule, show their work, and answer the question. Includes color and black-and-white versions and answer keys.
