Five pages that tie one more and one less to things a child can see. Page 1 shows a group of ducks, apples or owls in rows of five with a dashed spot for the next one: count and write how many, draw one more in the spot, and write how many now. Page 2 does the same in a ten frame and finishes the sentence "5 and 1 more is". Page 3 turns it around: count a group, cross out one, and write how many are left. Page 4 crosses out one dot in a ten frame and finishes "1 less than 9 is". Page 5 shows teen numbers as a full ten frame and some more, and asks for the number one less and one more, up to 20. Each page starts with a worked example.
Build a tower of cubes and add one at a time while the class counts: 5, and one more is 6. Then take one away: 6, and one less is 5. On pages 1 and 3, have children touch and count the pictures before they write, then count again after they draw or cross out. Read each page's directions aloud and do the example together.
Line up a few toys and ask how many there are. Add one more and ask again, then take one away. Ask what number comes after 7, and what number comes before it, while you climb stairs or set the table.

One more and one less with pictures and ten frames, so children see that the next number counts one more thing. Students draw one more, cross out one, write how many now and find one less and one more to 20.
