Skills Covered

  • Work inside parentheses first, then × and ÷, then + and −, from left to right
  • Tell which operation comes first, second, and third
  • Find the value of expressions with brackets and braces, from the inside out
  • Write expressions from words and words from expressions
  • Compare expressions without working them out
  • Decide whether an equation is true, and add parentheses to make it true

How to Use This Pack

Five pages on writing and finding the value of numerical expressions. Page 1 shows that parentheses group numbers, then finds the value of six expressions in two steps, writing the step in parentheses first (12 − 4) × 6 = 8 × 6 = 48, and compares the same numbers grouped two ways. Page 2 sets out the order of operations, finds the value of expressions with no parentheses (including 18 ÷ 3 × 2 and 30 − 10 + 5, worked from left to right), and numbers the operations 1, 2, 3 in the order they are done. Page 3 names parentheses, brackets, and braces and works expressions such as 3 × [10 − (2 + 5)] one step at a time, then expressions with braces. Page 4 turns words into expressions and expressions into words (add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2 is 2 × (8 + 7)), writes two stories as expressions, sees that 3 × (18,932 + 921) is 3 times as large as 18,932 + 921 without working it out, and finds the value of expressions when n = 6. Page 5 marks equations with parentheses True or False, adds one pair of parentheses to make each equation true, and answers a riddle in a code.

In the Classroom

Write 4 + 2 × 5 on the board and ask for its value. When the class gets two answers, 30 and 14, show how parentheses settle it: (4 + 2) × 5 and 4 + (2 × 5). Before page 3, have students circle the innermost group in each expression first. The compare items on page 4 make a good class talk: ask how they know without adding.

At Home

Turn shopping into expressions: 3 packs of 6 juice boxes and 4 more is 3 × 6 + 4. Ask your child to write it, find the value, and say what would change with parentheses around 6 + 4.

Tips for Success

  • Groups first: ( ), then [ ], then { }, from the inside out
  • Then multiply and divide, from left to right
  • Then add and subtract, from left to right
  • Rewrite the expression after each step, so you only do one operation at a time
  • Parentheses can change the value: (4 + 2) × 5 is 30, but 4 + 2 × 5 is 14

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.OA.A.1 Find the value of expressions that group with parentheses, brackets or braces, doing the grouped parts first, and use these symbols when writing them.
  • 5.OA.A.2 Write expressions for calculations given in words, like 3 × (4 + 9), and describe what an expression means without working it out.

Order of Operations

5th Grade

A 5-page order of operations pack for 5th grade. Work inside parentheses first, multiply and divide before you add and subtract, and number the operations 1, 2, 3 in the order you do them. Work brackets and braces from the inside out, write expressions from words and words from expressions, write a story as an expression, and compare expressions without working them out. Mark equations with parentheses True or False, add parentheses to make equations true, and solve a riddle. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
