Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Find the value of expressions with parentheses, and number the operations in order
  • Work from the inside out with brackets and braces
  • Write an expression from words, and compare expressions without working them out
  • The last six questions (true or false and where the parentheses go, the properties, variables, a multi-step story with a letter) are for the states that teach them
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Parentheses first
  • The order of operations, step by step
  • Brackets and braces
  • Write expressions from words
  • Compare expressions without working them out
  • True or false, and where the parentheses go
  • Equivalent expressions with the properties
  • Write and evaluate expressions with a letter
  • Multi-step stories with a letter for the unknown

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on expressions and equations, to do together the day before the test. Its 14 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so no problem on the review is on the test. Questions 9 to 14 are for the states that teach them, as on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. For each expression, ask which part comes first and why; for each story, ask what the letter stands for. Leave out questions 9 to 14 if your class does not learn them. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to explain each step of an expression out loud, and to check a story's answer by putting it back into the equation.

Tips for Success

  • Underline the innermost group before starting
  • Do × and ÷ from left to right, then + and − from left to right
  • Read the words of an expression twice before writing it
  • Say what the letter stands for before writing the equation
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 5.OA.A.1 Find the value of expressions that group with parentheses, brackets or braces, doing the grouped parts first, and use these symbols when writing them.
  • 5.OA.A.2 Write expressions for calculations given in words, like 3 × (4 + 9), and describe what an expression means without working it out.
