How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on expressions and equations, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 4th grade and earlier skills the unit builds on: products and quotients, a missing number in an equation, multiplying and dividing by a 1-digit number, "times as many", missing numbers with the properties, and a two-step story written as an equation with a letter. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who trips on the products and quotients needs that practice beside the order of operations, and one who misses the missing numbers needs work on the link between adding and subtracting, and multiplying and dividing, before the lessons on variables. A low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: practice products like 11 × 8 and 14 × 5 aloud, and make up two-step stories from everyday shopping.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Ask students to say what the letter stands for in the story
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.OA.A.1 Read a multiplication equation as a comparison (24 = 3 × 8: 24 is 3 times as many as 8) and write comparisons as equations.
  • 4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve story problems that compare amounts (times as many), using drawings and equations, and tell them apart from comparing by adding.
  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 5.NBT.B.5 Multiply whole numbers with many digits fluently, using the standard written method.

5th Grade Expressions and Equations Pre-Check

5th Grade

A check to give before the unit on the order of operations, expressions and equations, on the skills it builds on. Students multiply and divide, find missing numbers, compare with "times as many", use the properties and solve a two-step story with a letter.
