Features

  • Two quick questions a ticket
  • An "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves
  • Work inside parentheses first, with the same numbers grouped two ways
  • Number the steps of the order of operations, then find the value
  • Work from the inside out with brackets and braces
  • Write an expression from words, and compare expressions without working them out
  • Tickets 5.5 to 5.8 (true or false and where the parentheses go, the properties, variables, multi-step stories with a letter) are for the states that teach them in 5th grade
  • Answer keys for every ticket

How to Use This Pack

Eight exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 5th grade unit on expressions and equations, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, such as an expression to work out step by step or an equation to write for a story, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Where more than one answer is right, such as an expression for words or an equation for a story, the key shows one way and says so. Tickets 5.5 to 5.8 are for the states that teach those lessons in this unit; skip the ones your class does not learn. No ticket asks a problem from the practice sheets the lesson plans use. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing together. Ask your child to say each step of an expression aloud in order, starting with the part inside the grouping symbols.

Tips for Success

  • Have students underline the part they work out first
  • Write each step on a new line under the one before
  • Read an expression aloud in words before writing it
  • Say what the letter stands for before writing an equation
  • Put the answer back into the equation to check it

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 5.OA.A.1 Find the value of expressions that group with parentheses, brackets or braces, doing the grouped parts first, and use these symbols when writing them.
  • 5.OA.A.2 Write expressions for calculations given in words, like 3 × (4 + 9), and describe what an expression means without working it out.
