Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Find the value of the same numbers grouped two ways, and of an expression with parentheses
  • Number the operations in the order they are done, then find the value
  • Work from the inside out with brackets and braces
  • Write an expression from words, and compare expressions without working them out
  • The last six questions (true or false and where the parentheses go, the properties, variables, a multi-step story with a letter) are for the states that teach them in 5th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Parentheses first
  • The order of operations, step by step
  • Brackets and braces
  • Write expressions from words
  • Compare expressions without working them out
  • True or false, and where the parentheses go
  • Equivalent expressions with the properties
  • Write and evaluate expressions with a letter
  • Multi-step stories with a letter for the unknown

How to Use This Pack

The unit test for the fifth unit of 5th grade, expressions and equations. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 14 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 1 to 8 are the Common Core part of the unit; questions 9 to 14 (true or false and where the parentheses go, the properties, variables and a multi-step story) are for the states that teach them in this unit.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Several questions hold more than one part, such as two values or three missing numbers: give the point when all are right, or score them by the part if you like. Where more than one answer is right, such as an expression for words or an equation for a story, the key shows one way and says so; any letter will do. Leave out questions 9 to 14 if your class does not learn them and score out of 8. No question asks a problem from the unit's exit tickets or the practice sheets. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to say each step of an expression aloud, starting with the part inside the grouping symbols, and to tell what the letter stands for before writing an equation.

Tips for Success

  • Have students underline the part they work out first
  • Write each step on a new line under the one before
  • Read an expression aloud in words before writing it
  • Put the answer back into the equation to check it
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 5.OA.A.1 Find the value of expressions that group with parentheses, brackets or braces, doing the grouped parts first, and use these symbols when writing them.
  • 5.OA.A.2 Write expressions for calculations given in words, like 3 × (4 + 9), and describe what an expression means without working it out.
