Skills Covered

  • Identify patterns in multiplication tables
  • Recognize even-number and doubling relationships
  • Explore the commutative property of multiplication
  • Extend sequences and identify term positions
  • Predict products using number patterns
  • Explain and justify mathematical relationships

How to Use This Pack

Students use a multiplication-table map and three journal pages to complete five investigations. Keep the map available as they explore patterns, make predictions, and explain why they work.

In the Classroom

Introduce the map and show how to read rows and columns. Guide students through the five stops in order, or assign journal pages across lessons or small groups. Encourage explanations, not just answers.

At Home

Work through one or two stops at a time. Use the map to check products, and ask your child to explain each pattern before looking at the answer key.

Tips for Success

  • Compare numbers in the same row to find patterns
  • Look for relationships between different rows
  • Use equal groups or arrays to explain multiplication
  • Check several examples before describing a rule

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.OA.C.3 Decide if up to 20 objects are odd or even (match them in twos or skip count by 2s); write evens as doubles.
  • 3.OA.B.5 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties to multiply and divide, such as finding 7 × 8 from 7 × 5 and 7 × 3.
  • 3.OA.D.9 Spot patterns in addition tables, times tables and other arithmetic, and explain them with properties, like why multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
