Five pages of place value with 4- and 5-digit numbers. Page 1 counts thousands cubes, hundreds flats, tens rods, and ones to write a number. Page 2 asks for the value of an underlined digit, with a worked example at the top. Page 3 is a table of standard, expanded, and word form, with one form given in each row. Page 4 compares twelve pairs of numbers and orders four sets of three. Page 5 fills a place value chart to the hundred thousands, follows the "10 times as much" pattern from ones to a hundred thousand, and finds 1,000 more, 1,000 less, and 10,000 more.
Build a number or two from page 1 with real base-ten blocks before students start, and point out that the thousands cube is ten flats stacked. Page 4 makes a good partner task: partners say which place decided each comparison.
Read big numbers you see together, like the miles on a car or the price of a TV, and ask what the digit in the thousands place is worth. Say a number and let your child write it with commas.
