How to Use This Pack

The unit test on place value to 1,000,000. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 11 and 12 (numbers to 999,999,999) are for the states that teach the millions period in 4th grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Most questions have two or three parts: give the point when every part is right, or score them by the part if you like. Questions 11 and 12 are taught in 4th grade in some states only: leave them out if your class does not learn them and score out of 10. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Read big numbers aloud together (a price, a population, a distance) and ask what each digit is worth.

Tips for Success

  • Have students say the period names (thousands, ones) before reading a big number
  • Point out the commas: each one marks the end of a period
  • Ask "how many times as much?" when the same digit moves one place to the left
  • Count the steps on a number line before reading a point
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NBT.A.1 Know that each place in a whole number is worth ten times the place to its right, so 500 is ten times 50.
  • 4.NBT.A.2 Read and write whole numbers to a million in digits, words and expanded form, and compare them by place value using >, = or <.
