How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on place value to 1,000,000, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions take the lessons in the test's order, with other numbers, and some ask the other way round: the review fills a place value chart where the test reads one, places points on a number line where the test reads them, and puts commas in nine-digit numbers. Questions 1 to 10 are the Common Core lessons, and questions 11 and 12 (numbers to 999,999,999) are for the states that teach them. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Questions 11 and 12 are taught in 4th grade in some states only: leave them out if your class does not learn them. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to read each big number aloud and say what one of its digits is worth.

Tips for Success

  • Say the period names before reading a big number aloud
  • Have students write numbers in a place value chart when the zeros trip them up
  • Ask "how many times as much?" when a digit moves one place left
  • On number lines, find the size of one step first
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NBT.A.1 Know that each place in a whole number is worth ten times the place to its right, so 500 is ten times 50.
  • 4.NBT.A.2 Read and write whole numbers to a million in digits, words and expanded form, and compare them by place value using >, = or <.
