One page to give on the first day of the unit on place value to 1,000,000, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 3rd grade place value the unit builds on: the value of a digit in a four-digit number, expanded form both ways, comparing four-digit numbers, a number line to 10,000, tens and hundreds, and numbers written in words. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who mixes up the places in a four-digit number needs a place value chart and base-ten blocks before the larger numbers, and one who misses the number line needs to count the steps between labeled marks. Nothing on the page goes past 10,000, so it shows what each student brings to the unit, not what the unit will teach.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: read four-digit numbers aloud together, and ask what each digit is worth.

A check to give before the unit on place value to 1,000,000, on the four-digit place value it builds on. Students find the value of a digit, write expanded form and numbers from words, compare numbers, read a number line to 10,000 and count tens and hundreds.
