How to Use This Pack

Seven exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 4th grade unit on place value to 1,000,000, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Ticket 1.7 is for the states that teach numbers to 999,999,999 in 4th grade; skip it if your class does not. The unit test is a separate pack, and no ticket asks one of its problems.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Read a big number aloud and ask your child what one of its digits is worth.

Tips for Success

  • Keep a place value chart on the board for the first tickets
  • Have students say the period names before they read a big number
  • Ask "how many times as much?" when the same digit moves one place left
  • On number lines, find the size of one step first
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NBT.A.1 Know that each place in a whole number is worth ten times the place to its right, so 500 is ten times 50.
  • 4.NBT.A.2 Read and write whole numbers to a million in digits, words and expanded form, and compare them by place value using >, = or <.
