Five pages on the properties of addition, in words first graders use. Page 1 shows six cube trains and the same trains turned around: students write an addition fact for each and see that the sum stays the same. Page 2 gives twelve facts to write as turn-around facts. Page 3 adds zero, then marks eight equations True or False, such as 6 + 3 = 3 + 6 and 4 + 0 = 0. Page 4 adds three numbers by circling the two that make 10 first. Page 5 mixes all three ideas into missing-number equations like 9 + 6 = 6 + __ and 3 + 7 + 5 = 10 + __.
Before page 1, have students build a cube train in two colors, write its addition fact, then turn the train around and write the new fact. Page 3's True or False equations make a good whole-class talk: what does the equal sign say about the two sides?
Line up two kinds of small toys or snacks, say 4 grapes and 3 crackers, and ask how many in all. Then swap their order and ask again. On page 4, let your child find the pair that makes 10 before adding the third number.

A 5-page properties of addition pack for 1st and 2nd grade. Turn cube trains around to see that 3 + 5 and 5 + 3 make the same sum, write turn-around facts, add zero, mark equations true or false, make a ten first to add three numbers, and use all three ideas to find missing numbers.
