How to Use This Pack

Five pages of story problems that add three numbers, with sums within 20. Page 1 asks students to look for a 10 first: in 7 frogs, 2 frogs and 3 frogs, the 7 and 3 make 10. On page 2 the three numbers of each story are printed under it, and students circle the two they add first: a pair that makes 10, or a double like 4 and 4. Page 3 has two ten frames for each story. Page 4 leaves room to draw. Page 5 mixes stories where more come "then ... then" with stories that put three groups together. The number sentences have three addends: 7 + 2 + 3 = 12.

In the Classroom

Give each pair of students three dice or three number cards and ask which two they would add first, and why. On page 2, collect the pairs students circled and sort them into "makes 10" and "double".

At Home

Count snacks in three small piles and ask your child which two piles to put together first. Try it both ways to see that the total is the same.

Tips for Success

  • You can add the three numbers in any order: the total is the same
  • Look for two numbers that make 10: 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5
  • No 10? Look for a double, like 4 and 4 or 6 and 6
  • Add the third number last

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.A.1 Solve story problems up to 20 that join, separate, combine or compare amounts, with the missing number in any spot, using objects, drawings or equations.
  • 1.OA.A.2 Solve story problems where three numbers are added together for a total of 20 or less.
  • 1.OA.B.3 Use the order and grouping rules of addition as shortcuts, for example knowing 5 + 9 gives the same answer as 9 + 5.
