How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on story problems to 20, to do together the day before the test. Its 10 questions are the same kinds of story as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. For most stories students write a number sentence, with + or − in the circle, and the answer with its unit. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, reading the stories aloud. Work a story, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Question 10 asks students to write their own story: share a few and check that each matches the number sentence and asks a question. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Read each story together, and ask your child to tell it back in their own words before they solve it. Counters, coins or small toys help them act it out.

Tips for Success

  • Read each story twice: once to picture it, once to find the question
  • Ask: do more come, do some go away, or are we comparing?
  • A story can start with "some": that number is the one to find
  • Look for two numbers that make 10 when a story has three numbers
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment
