How to Use This Pack

Ten exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on story problems to 20, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students solve two short story problems, writing a number sentence or filling in a model and the answer with its label, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Read the stories aloud for students who are still learning to read; the math is what is being checked. A number sentence written another way is right when it fits the story (a subtraction for a how many more story, for example). The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing story problems together. Read the story aloud, ask your child to tell it back in their own words, and then to show you how they solved it.

Tips for Success

  • Read each story twice: once to picture it, once to find the question
  • Ask: do more come, do some go away, or are we comparing?
  • In a how many at first story, the start is the number to find
  • Look for two numbers that make 10 when a story has three numbers
  • Check that every answer has its label, like 9 cookies

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

1st Grade Word Problems Exit Tickets

1st Grade

Exit tickets for every lesson of a 1st grade unit on story problems to 20: one page a lesson, with the same ticket four times to copy and cut apart. Each ticket has two quick story problems and ends with an "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves. Students solve add to and take from stories with ten frames and pictures, put together and take apart, find how many more are needed and how many there were at first, compare two groups, add three numbers in a story, fill in number bonds and bar models, pick the number sentence that matches a story, and write a story and a question of their own. Every story has numbers within 20 and asks for an answer with its label. Answer keys for every ticket.
