Skills Covered

  • Draw a picture to solve a story problem
  • Fill in a number bond for a story
  • Write the numbers of a story in a bar model
  • Draw a bar model of your own
  • Show a story as a jump on a number line
  • Write a number sentence that matches the model

How to Use This Pack

Five pages, one model on each, so students learn the ways to show a story problem. Page 1 leaves room to draw: circles, dots or quick sketches. Page 2 puts a number bond beside each story; the whole goes on top. Page 3 prints an empty bar model for each story: students write the story's numbers in the pieces and under the brace, and the question mark shows what to find. On page 4 they draw the bar model themselves. Page 5 uses a number line from 0 to 20; the key shows each jump. The stories on every page mix adding to, taking from, parts of a whole, comparing and how many more, and every page starts with a worked example.

In the Classroom

Solve one story five ways on the board, one model from each page, and ask which way students like best and why. Then let students choose a model for page 1 before trying the others. Bar models are new for many 1st graders: build them first with cube trains.

At Home

Ask your child to "show me" each answer: a drawing, a number bond or a bar. Any model that matches the story is fine; the number sentence is the same.

Tips for Success

  • Draw simple: circles or dots are faster than real pictures
  • In a number bond, the whole goes on top and the parts below
  • In a bar model, the long bar is the whole; a question mark shows what to find
  • On a number line, start at the first number and jump

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.3 Break a number up to 10 into two parts several ways, recording each as a picture or equation (7 = 3 + 4).
  • 1.OA.A.1 Solve story problems up to 20 that join, separate, combine or compare amounts, with the missing number in any spot, using objects, drawings or equations.
  • 1.OA.A.2 Solve story problems where three numbers are added together for a total of 20 or less.
  • 1.OA.D.8 Solve for the missing number in adding or subtracting equations like 9 + ? = 15 or ? - 4 = 6.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.
