Six pages on the clocks you see on towers, watches and in classrooms. Page 1 shows I = 1, V = 5 and X = 10 and the add-and-take-away rule (VI is 6, IV is 4), then students finish a chart of the numerals 1 to 12 and change eight numerals to numbers and eight numbers to numerals. Page 2 is a large clock face with XII, III, VI and IX printed: students write the other eight numerals from a word bank. Pages 3 and 4 have nine Roman numeral clocks each, to read and write on a digital display (hours and half hours, then five minutes), and page 5 gives nine digital times to show by drawing the hands. Page 6 is a Roman numeral clock with hands to cut out and join with a paper fastener.
Start with page 1 as a mini-lesson: write I, V and X on the board and build 1 to 12 together. Page 2 shows that the numerals sit in the same places as on an ordinary clock, so students who can tell time already only need to read the numerals. Make the clock on page 6 on card stock for practice all year.
Look for Roman numerals around you: on watches, clock towers, book chapters, movie credits and the Super Bowl logo. Ask your child to read them.
