Eighteen pages of flash cards, eight to a page: the 40 Dolch pre-primer words, then the 52 primer words, then the 41 first grade words, each list A to Z and starting on a page of its own. Every card shows one word in the ball-and-stick print children learn to write, and the list it comes from in small letters in a corner. The spaces left at the end of a list are blank cards for words of your own, such as children's names. Print one-sided, on card stock if you can, and cut along the dashed lines.
Keep each list in its own envelope and add a few words at a time as you teach them. Flash a card and have children read it together, then hand out a pile for partners to read to each other. Lay two words that look alike side by side, such as was and saw or then and them, and ask what is different. A quick game: spread the cards face up and call a word for a child to find.
Start with five cards. Read them together, then mix them up and see how many your child reads on their own. Add a new card when the first ones are easy, and keep the known ones in a "words I can read" pile.
Flash cards for the Dolch pre-primer, primer and first grade sight words, one word to a card in the print children learn. Children cut them apart, read them, sort them and play games with them until every word is known on sight.
