How to Use This Pack

Five pages for Year 1 on saying the numbers to 30 in te reo Māori. The words are for saying aloud together: read each page with the class before children work on their own. Page 1 is a chart of 1 to 30 to say together, with each word shown in its parts: the tens, mā (and), then the ones, and what a macron (the line above a vowel) does. Page 2 matches the numbers 1 to 10, each with a ten frame, to their words. On page 3 children count pictures set out in ten frames, say the number and circle its word; the other two words are ones that are easy to mix up, such as tekau mā rua (12) and rua tekau (20). Page 4 has the numbers 11 to 19, each as a full ten frame and the ones: children write the missing ones word after tekau mā, using the word bank. On page 5 children read the words for numbers from 21 to 30, colour that many boxes of three ten frames and write the number. Each worksheet starts with a worked example.

In the Classroom

Say page 1 together before anything else: count from tahi to toru tekau, clapping on each tekau. Then point to the parts of a word: tekau mā toru is ten and three, and rua tekau is two tens. On page 3, say all three words aloud before children choose, and talk about tekau mā rua and rua tekau: the same words make a different number. Count in te reo Māori at other times of the day too, when lining up or handing out books.

At Home

Count stairs, toys or spoons in te reo Māori together, up to toru tekau. Hold up some fingers and take turns saying the number. Point to a number on page 1 and ask your child to say it.

Tips for Success

  • Say the words together before writing anything
  • mā means and: tekau mā rua is ten and two, 12
  • In 20 and 30 the tens word comes first: rua tekau is two tens
  • tekau mā rua (12) and rua tekau (20) use the same words in a different order
  • A macron (a line above a vowel) shows that the vowel sound is held longer: whā (four)
