Five pages of 1 more with numbers to 5, each holding 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 once, so every page ends at 5 and starts with zero. The train's five cars are a five frame: they fill from the engine, one animal a car. On page 1 children count the riders, see 1 more waiting on the platform and write how many now. Page 2 draws 1 more dot in a five frame and finishes "1 more than 3 is". Page 3 puts a little engine on a number path from 0 to 5: children draw its hop to the next number. Page 4 matches each train to the five frame with 1 more, and on page 5 children draw that many dots on an empty train, then 1 more.
Line up five chairs as a train and let children climb aboard one at a time. Each time, ask "How many are on the train? One more gets on. How many now?" and count the whole train again. Then point out that the number you say next is always 1 more. On page 3, a child who counts all the boxes from 0 instead of hopping once is still finding the answer: show how one hop gets there faster.
Line up toys in a row of five: put 2 in a row, add 1 more and ask how many now. Try it from 0 (an empty row) up to 5, and say the numbers together as you go.

One more with numbers to 5, on a train whose five cars are a five frame, so the next number is always the next car. Children count the riders as one more gets on, draw one more dot, hop to the next number on a path and match each train to the frame with one more.
