How to Use This Pack

Five pages on the ways a date can be written. Page 1 introduces year-month-day dates, the form used on forms and in computers: students turn dates like 2026-10-27 into words, then write dates in words as numbers, with a strip of the month numbers to help. Page 2 matches eight dates to the same date written another way, including two pairs that use the same numbers in a different order. Page 3 is a table: each row gives a date one way and students write it the other two ways. Page 4 is about slash dates: students read each one as day/month/year and as month/day/year, decide which slash dates can be read two ways, and rewrite day/month/year dates as year-month-day. Page 5 has a November 2026 calendar: students find dates written as year-month-day and write them with the day of the week, then number sets of dates from earliest to latest.

In the Classroom

Write today's date on the board in all the ways from the pack and ask which parts change and which stay the same. Then write 03/04 and let the class argue about what it means before page 4: some will read March 4 and some 3 April, which is exactly why a year-month-day date is the safe choice.

At Home

Look for dates around the house: on a milk carton, a receipt, a library slip or a calendar. Ask your child which way each one is written and to read it aloud as a date in words. Write family birthdays as year-month-day and put them in order.

Tips for Success

  • A year-month-day date always starts with the four-digit year
  • Months and days under 10 get a 0 in front: March is 03
  • A slash date with a number over 12 can be read only one way: no month is 13 or more
  • When the two numbers are the same, as in 06/06, both readings give the same date
  • To order year-month-day dates, compare the years first, then the months, then the days
