How to Use This Pack

Thirteen exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on adding and subtracting within 10, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two or three questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Tickets 2.10 and 2.11 are quick fact checks: time them if you like. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Read the questions aloud, and let your child use fingers or small objects to show how they solved each one.

Tips for Success

  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • Keep counters or a ten frame on the desk for students who still need them
  • On the number lines, ask students to draw their hops so you can see their thinking
  • A fact family uses the same three numbers in all four facts
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.1 Show adding and taking away in many ways: fingers, objects, pictures, sounds, acting out, words, or number sentences.
  • K.OA.A.2 Solve story problems and add or subtract with totals up to 10, modeling them with objects or drawings.
  • K.OA.A.3 Break a number up to 10 into two parts several ways, recording each as a picture or equation (7 = 3 + 4).
  • K.OA.A.4 For a number from 1 to 9, find the partner that adds with it to 10, and show it in a picture or number sentence.
  • 1.OA.B.4 Treat subtraction as finding a missing addend: to solve 12 - 9, ask what added to 9 makes 12.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
  • 1.OA.D.8 Solve for the missing number in adding or subtracting equations like 9 + ? = 15 or ? - 4 = 6.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.

1st Grade Add and Subtract Within 10 Exit Tickets

1st Grade

Exit tickets for every lesson of a 1st grade unit on adding and subtracting within 10: one page a lesson, with the same ticket four times to copy and cut apart. Each ticket has two or three quick questions and ends with an "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves. Students write number sentences for pictures and ten frames, fill in number bonds, make 10, add and subtract on a number line, find doubles and missing numbers, write a fact family, answer facts to 10, solve story problems and finish number puzzles. Answer keys for every ticket.
