One page to give on the first day of the unit on adding and subtracting within 10, before any teaching. Its seven questions are on what the unit builds on, most of them within 5: a number sentence for a picture and for a ten frame with dots crossed out, number bonds, making 10, an add to story, and addition and subtraction facts. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet write a number sentence for a picture needs counters in hand for the first lessons, and one who misses the facts within 5 needs fact practice beside the unit. Read the story aloud for students who are still learning to read. The questions are the unit's easiest, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on adding and subtracting within 10 starts: put two small groups of toys together and count them, take some away, and ask what number sentence tells the story.
