How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on addition strategies, before any teaching. Its six questions stay within 10 and are on what the unit builds on: counting on from the bigger number, number bonds, a double, ways to make 10, adding three numbers and addition facts. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who counts all instead of counting on, or who cannot yet make 10, needs ten frames and counters in hand for the first lessons, and one who misses the facts to 10 needs fact practice beside the unit. Every question stays within 10, so it shows who is ready to go past 10.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on addition strategies starts: roll a die, say the bigger number and count on, and find pairs of numbers that make 10.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep a ten frame and counters out for a student who missed the make 10 question
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.3 Break a number up to 10 into two parts several ways, recording each as a picture or equation (7 = 3 + 4).
  • K.OA.A.4 For a number from 1 to 9, find the partner that adds with it to 10, and show it in a picture or number sentence.
  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
