How to Use This Pack

Seven pages for one unit on numbers to 120. Page 1 is a pre-check to give before the unit, to see what students already know. Pages 2 and 3 are a review to do together before the test, with a tip on every question. Pages 4 and 5 are the unit test, Form A. Pages 6 and 7 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 10 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day of the unit and sort the class by what they missed. Do the review the day before the test, reading the tips aloud. Questions 8 to 10 (skip counting, number words, ordinal numbers) are taught in 1st grade in some states only: leave them out and score out of 7 if your class does not learn them. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school, or Form B as a check after the unit. Read each question aloud with your child, and ask them to show how they counted.

Tips for Success

  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • Counting on past 99 is where most mistakes happen; watch for 100, 101
  • On the 120 chart, up is 10 less and down is 10 more
  • Let students point to each ten frame as they count by tens
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.1 Say the numbers in order up to 100, counting by 1s and also by 10s.
  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.NBT.A.1 Count up to 120 from any starting number, and read, write and use numerals up to 120 to show how many objects.
  • 1.NBT.B.3 Compare two-digit numbers by looking at their tens and ones, and write the result with >, = or <.
  • 2.OA.C.3 Decide if up to 20 objects are odd or even (match them in twos or skip count by 2s); write evens as doubles.
  • 2.NBT.A.2 Count up to 1,000, and count by fives, tens and hundreds.
  • 2.NBT.A.3 Read and write numbers up to 1,000 as digits, in words, and in expanded form (like 300 + 40 + 7).
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.

1st Grade Numbers to 120 Test

1st Grade

A unit test for counting to 120 in 1st grade: a one-page pre-check, a two-page review with a tip on every question, and the unit test in two forms (A and B) that ask the same questions with different numbers. Students count on and back from any number, count past 100, fill in pieces of the 120 chart, write the numbers before, after and between, count big groups by tens, and write missing numbers on a number line. The last three questions (skip counting, number words, ordinal numbers) are for the states that teach them in 1st grade. Answer keys name the skill and standard of every question.
