How to Use This Pack

Twelve exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on subtraction to 20 and the equal sign, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two quick questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Tickets 5.7 and 5.8 check the meaning of the equal sign: a student who writes 13 in 8 + 5 = □ + 9 is reading = as "the answer comes next". The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Read the questions aloud, and ask your child how they found each answer: did they count back, think addition or get to 10 first?

Tips for Success

  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • Counting back works best for taking away 1, 2, 3 or 4
  • To take away 8 or 9, think addition: 8 and what make 12?
  • The equal sign means both sides are the same, not "the answer comes next"
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.1 Show adding and taking away in many ways: fingers, objects, pictures, sounds, acting out, words, or number sentences.
  • 1.OA.B.4 Treat subtraction as finding a missing addend: to solve 12 - 9, ask what added to 9 makes 12.
  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
  • 1.OA.D.7 Know the equal sign means both sides have the same value, and decide whether addition and subtraction equations hold true.
  • 1.OA.D.8 Solve for the missing number in adding or subtracting equations like 9 + ? = 15 or ? - 4 = 6.

1st Grade Subtraction and Equal Sign Exit Tickets

1st Grade

Exit tickets for every lesson of a 1st grade unit on subtraction to 20 and the equal sign: one page a lesson, with the same ticket four times to copy and cut apart. Each ticket has two or three quick questions and ends with an "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves. Students count back on a number line, think addition to subtract, write fact families, get to 10 first to subtract, cross out pictures in ten frames, find missing numbers, balance both sides of an equal sign, decide if equations are true or false, find the unknown in any spot, subtract facts to 20, add and subtract mixed, and solve number puzzles. Answer keys for every ticket.
