One page to give on the first day of the unit on subtraction to 20 and the equal sign, before any teaching. Its seven questions are on what the unit builds on: counting back and taking away within 10, a small fact family, missing numbers, numbers around 10, and the addition facts subtraction builds on. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet count back needs a number line to point along for the first lessons, and one who misses the addition facts past 10 needs fact practice beside the unit, since thinking addition to subtract leans on them. The questions are the unit's easiest, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on subtraction starts: count back from 10 together, and ask how many are left when you take a few toys away from a group.

A check to give before the unit on subtraction to 20 and the equal sign, on what the unit builds on. Students count back, cross out to subtract, write a fact family, find missing numbers, break apart numbers around 10 and answer facts.
