One page to give on the first day of the unit on story problems to 20, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: picture stories within 10, a part-part-whole story, number bonds, and choosing + or − to make a number sentence true. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day, reading each story aloud for students who are still learning to read, and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet tell adding from taking away needs counters to act out the stories in the first lessons, and one who misses the number bonds needs part-part-whole practice beside the unit. The compare story is new to most students, so a miss there is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on story problems starts: tell a short story with toys, like "You have 5 cars and get 3 more," and ask your child to show it and say how many.
