Five pages of short story problems with numbers within 10. On page 1 the pictures in each story are drawn for you: count the first group and the group that joins it, then write the number sentence, such as 4 + 3 = 7. On page 2 students cross out the pictures that go away and count what is left. Page 3 puts two kinds of things together, apples and pears or soccer balls and basketballs, to find how many in all. Page 4 has no pictures: students draw circles or quick sketches to solve. Page 5 mixes adding and taking away, and students write + or − in the number sentence themselves. The first story on pages 1 to 4 is a worked example.
Read each story aloud while students follow along, then act it out with counters or real objects before anyone writes. Ask: are things joining, going away, or are two groups being put together? On page 5, have partners agree on + or − before they solve.
Use snacks or small toys to act out each story: put out 4 apples, add 3 more, and count them all. Let your child cross out or draw on the page, then read the number sentence aloud together.
