How to Use This Pack

Five pages of strategies for subtracting two-digit numbers. Page 1 subtracts by place value when there are enough ones: tens from tens, ones from ones, then the two parts (68 - 25 is 40 + 3, 43). Page 2 shows the first number in base-ten blocks when there are not enough ones: students trade a ten for 10 ones (52 is 4 tens 12 ones) and cross out what they take away; the answer key crosses out whole rods, the loose ones and the cubes of the traded rod. Page 3 jumps back on an open number line, by tens and then the ones (73 - 28: 63, 53, 45). Page 4 counts up from the number taken away, to the next ten, then by tens, then the ones (62 - 47: 3 + 10 + 2 = 15), and checks by adding. Page 5 subtracts from 100 and from tens with a check, then shows two animals with different answers, one taking the smaller digit from the bigger or forgetting the ten it traded; students circle who is right and show how they know. Each page starts with a worked example.

In the Classroom

Before page 2, build 52 with rods and cubes and ask a student to take away 7 ones. When they cannot, let the class decide what to do, then trade a rod for 10 cubes. Page 4 is the strategy children use for change: start at the price and count up to what you paid. Ask "Which way was easier, back or up?" after pages 3 and 4.

At Home

Count up for change: "This costs 47 cents and I pay 62. How much do I get back?" Count 47, 50, 60, 62 together and add the jumps. Ask your child to check every answer by adding it back.

Tips for Success

  • Look at the ones first. Not enough? Trade a ten for 10 ones
  • After a trade there is one ten less and ten more ones
  • Jump back by tens first, then the ones
  • Count up: to the next ten, then by tens, then the ones
  • Check: the answer plus the number taken away gives the first number

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Tell why an adding or subtracting method gives the right answer, reasoning from place value and number properties.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.

2-Digit Subtraction Strategies

2nd Grade

A 5-page 2nd grade pack for subtracting two-digit numbers with place value strategies. Subtract the tens and the ones (68 - 25 = 40 + 3), then break a ten in base-ten blocks when there are not enough ones (52 is 4 tens 12 ones) and cross out. Jump back by tens and then the ones on an open number line, and count up from the number you take away (62 - 47: 3 + 10 + 2 = 15). Last, subtract from 100 and from tens, check by adding, and decide which animal is right. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
