How to Use This Pack

Ten exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 2nd grade unit on adding and subtracting within 1,000, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. The keys write every carried 1 and traded digit and cross out the blocks, so a wrong answer shows where the student went off. Ticket 10.10 (story problems within 1,000) is for the states that teach it in 2nd grade, such as Texas; skip it if your class does not. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child to say what happens in each place: do the ones make a new ten, or do they need to trade a ten for 10 ones?

Tips for Success

  • Keep base-ten blocks on the tables for the blocks and drawing tickets
  • Ask "do the ones make a new ten?" before every column problem
  • Have students check a subtraction by adding the answer back
  • Across a zero, trade a hundred for 10 tens first, then a ten for 10 ones
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 2.NBT.B.8 Mentally find the number 10 or 100 greater or smaller than any number from 100 to 900.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Tell why an adding or subtracting method gives the right answer, reasoning from place value and number properties.
  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step story problems with +, −, × and ÷, using a letter for the missing amount, and check answers by estimating or rounding.
