Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Find 10 more, 10 less, 100 more and 100 less, and add and subtract hundreds and tens
  • Add with base-ten blocks and trade, add by partial sums, and add in columns
  • Subtract with blocks by breaking a ten, and break apart the number taken away
  • Subtract in columns (across a zero too)
  • Find who is right and show how they know
  • The last two questions (solving a story problem within 1,000 and writing a story for a number sentence) are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on adding and subtracting within 1,000, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. The last two (solving a story problem and writing a story for a number sentence) are for the states that teach them. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, with base-ten blocks on the tables. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Ask "do the ones make a new ten?" before every column problem. The keys write every carried 1 and traded digit and name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to say what they did in each place: did the ones make a new ten, or did they need to trade a ten for 10 ones?

Tips for Success

  • Keep base-ten blocks out
  • Ask "do the ones make a new ten?" before every column problem
  • Have students check a subtraction by adding the answer back
  • On Who is right, ask what mistake the other animal made
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 2.NBT.B.8 Mentally find the number 10 or 100 greater or smaller than any number from 100 to 900.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Tell why an adding or subtracting method gives the right answer, reasoning from place value and number properties.
  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step story problems with +, −, × and ÷, using a letter for the missing amount, and check answers by estimating or rounding.
