One page to give on the first day of the unit on adding within 100, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: addition facts past 10, the tens and ones of base-ten blocks, adding tens, adding a one-digit number to a two-digit number (once with a new ten, once without), the numbers that make 10 and counting on by tens. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and see who needs more time with tens and ones: a student who misses the blocks or the tens needs base-ten blocks in hand for the first lessons, and one who misses the facts past 10 needs fact practice beside the unit. Nothing on the page asks for two two-digit numbers added yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on adding within 100 starts: practice the facts past 10, and count on by tens together from a number like 23.

A check to give before the unit on adding within 100, on what the unit builds on. Students answer addition facts past 10, write the tens and ones of base-ten blocks, add tens, add a one-digit number to a two-digit number, find the number that makes 10 and count on by tens.
