How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on subtracting within 100, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: subtraction facts within 20, the tens and ones of base-ten blocks and the same number with a ten traded, taking away tens, adding two-digit numbers, thinking addition to subtract and counting up to the next ten. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and see who can trade a ten for 10 ones: a student who cannot yet needs base-ten blocks in hand for the lessons on breaking a ten, and one who misses the facts within 20 needs fact practice beside the unit. Nothing on the page asks for a two-digit number taken from another yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on subtracting within 100 starts: practice the subtraction facts within 20 aloud, and count up from a number like 46 to the next ten.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep base-ten blocks out for a student who missed the trade
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.B.4 Treat subtraction as finding a missing addend: to solve 12 - 9, ask what added to 9 makes 12.
  • 1.NBT.B.2a See a group of ten ones as one unit called a ten.
  • 1.NBT.B.2c Know that 10, 20, 30 and so on up to 90 mean 1 to 9 tens with no ones.
  • 2.OA.B.2 Add and subtract to 20 quickly using strategies done in the head, and by year's end instantly recall every sum of two single-digit numbers.
  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
