One page to give on the first day of the unit on adding and subtracting within 1,000, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: 10 more and 10 less, adding and subtracting tens, reading base-ten blocks, expanded form, and adding and subtracting two-digit numbers in columns. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misses the blocks or expanded form needs base-ten blocks in hand for the first lessons, and one who misses the columns needs the adding and subtracting within 100 again beside the unit. Questions 5 and 6 are three column problems each: give the point when all three are right. Nothing on the page asks for three-digit adding or subtracting yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on adding and subtracting within 1,000 starts: say 10 more and 10 less than a number together, and practice two-digit adding and subtracting.

A check to give before the unit on adding and subtracting within 1,000, on what the unit builds on. Students find 10 more and 10 less, add and subtract tens, read hundreds, tens and ones in base-ten blocks, write expanded form, and add and subtract two-digit numbers in columns.
