Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Find 10 more and 10 less, add tens, and jump by tens and ones on an open number line
  • Add the tens and the ones, and trade 10 ones for a new ten with base-ten blocks and a quick drawing
  • Make a ten first, and add in columns
  • Add three and four two-digit numbers
  • Decide who is right and show how they know
  • The last two questions (make 100, and estimate to check a sum) are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • 10 more and 10 less, adding tens
  • Add on an open number line: tens, then ones
  • Add the tens and the ones (52 + 34)
  • Make a new ten with blocks and quick drawings
  • Make a ten first (48 + 35 = 50 + 33)
  • Add in columns with regrouping
  • Add three and four two-digit numbers
  • Who is right? Show how you know
  • Make 100
  • Estimate to check a sum

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on adding within 100, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. The last two (make 100, and estimate to check) are for the states that teach them. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, keeping base-ten blocks out. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Ask students to show their jumps on the number line, not only the sum. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to say how they added: tens first, a new ten from the ones, or a ten made first.

Tips for Success

  • Keep base-ten blocks out
  • Ask students to show their jumps on the number line, not only the sum
  • On the columns, look for the carried 1 over the tens
  • Read the who is right question aloud and let students talk it through
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 2.NBT.B.8 Mentally find the number 10 or 100 greater or smaller than any number from 100 to 900.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Tell why an adding or subtracting method gives the right answer, reasoning from place value and number properties.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.
  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
