How to Use This Pack

Ten lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 2nd grade unit on adding within 100, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the ten lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quizzes for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lessons 4.6 (make 100) and 4.10 (estimate to check a sum) are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Bundles of ten straws or craft sticks work as well as base-ten blocks. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Keep base-ten blocks and a hundreds chart on the tables for the whole unit
  • Ask "Do the ones make a new ten?" before every sum
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 2.NBT.B.8 Mentally find the number 10 or 100 greater or smaller than any number from 100 to 900.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Tell why an adding or subtracting method gives the right answer, reasoning from place value and number properties.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.
  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
