Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers and pictures
  • Read picture graphs and bar graphs with four kinds
  • Make a picture graph from a tally chart and a bar graph from a table
  • Use the graphs to find how many more, how many in all and how many are not one kind
  • The last three questions are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade: tallying the answers to a class survey into a table with a total, reading a pictograph where each picture stands for 2, and reading a bar graph that counts by 2s
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

How to Use This Pack

Seven pages for the data unit of 2nd grade. Page 1 is a pre-check to give before the unit, on the 1st grade sorting, tallies and graphs with three kinds that it builds on. Pages 2 and 3 are a review to do together before the test. Pages 4 and 5 are the unit test, Form A. Pages 6 and 7 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers and pictures, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 9 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day of the unit and sort the class by what they missed. Do the review the day before the test, going over each question together. Questions 7 to 9 (a class survey in a table with a total, a pictograph where each picture is 2, and a bar graph that counts by 2s) are taught in 2nd grade in some states: leave out the ones your class does not learn and score out of what is left. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school, or Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to point to the part of the graph that gives each answer, and to say how they found how many more.

Tips for Success

  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • Have students cross off each card or tally as they count it
  • Start every bar at 0 and color one box for each
  • For how many more, find both numbers first, then subtract
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.MD.C.4 Sort and show data in up to three groups, then answer questions about the total, each group's count, and how groups differ.
  • 2.MD.D.10 Make picture and bar graphs (one unit per square or picture) for up to four categories, and answer joining, separating and comparing questions from them.
  • 3.MD.B.3 Make picture and bar graphs where each symbol or square stands for several items, and answer one- and two-step comparison questions from them.
