One page to give on the first day of the unit on facts within 20, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 1st grade facts the unit builds on: a near double, numbers that make 10, a fact family, four addition and four subtraction facts within 10, and three numbers to add. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misses the facts within 10 needs fact practice beside the unit, and one who cannot find the number that makes 10 needs a ten frame in hand for the make a ten lessons. Questions 4 and 5 are four facts each: give the point when all four are right. Most of the page stays within 10, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on facts within 20 starts: say the facts within 10 aloud together, and find the pairs that make 10 with fingers or coins.

A check to give before the unit on facts within 20, on the facts within 10 and the strategies the unit builds on. Students add with a double, find the number that makes 10, answer addition and subtraction facts within 10, write a fact family and add three numbers.
