Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Add doubles and near doubles, and make a ten to add
  • Get to ten to subtract, and think addition to subtract

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on facts within 20, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. The second page is the state lessons (three numbers, fact families, missing numbers, and = or ≠): skip it if your class does not learn them. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, with a double ten frame out. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Ask students to show the ten they made, not only the answer. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to say how they found each answer: a double, a ten, or an addition fact they know.

Tips for Success

  • Ask students to show the ten they made, not only the answer
  • Keep a double ten frame out
  • On the near doubles, ask "1 more or 1 less than the double?"
  • Read ≠ aloud as "is not equal to"
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.B.3 Use the order and grouping rules of addition as shortcuts, for example knowing 5 + 9 gives the same answer as 9 + 5.
  • 1.OA.B.4 Treat subtraction as finding a missing addend: to solve 12 - 9, ask what added to 9 makes 12.
  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
  • 1.OA.D.7 Know the equal sign means both sides have the same value, and decide whether addition and subtraction equations hold true.
  • 1.OA.D.8 Solve for the missing number in adding or subtracting equations like 9 + ? = 15 or ? - 4 = 6.
  • 2.OA.B.2 Add and subtract to 20 quickly using strategies done in the head, and by year's end instantly recall every sum of two single-digit numbers.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.

2nd Grade Facts Within 20 Unit Review

A review of the unit on addition and subtraction facts within 20, to go over together the day before the test. Students use doubles, make a ten, get to ten to subtract, answer facts from memory and solve a follow-the-arrows puzzle, then add three numbers, write a fact family, find missing numbers and tell = from ≠.
