How to Use This Pack

Ten exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 2nd grade unit on place value to 1,000, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Ticket 2.10 (one number shown many ways) is for the states that teach it in 2nd grade; skip it if your class does not. The unit test is a separate pack, and no ticket asks one of its problems.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child to say each number as hundreds, tens and ones, and then in words.

Tips for Success

  • Keep base-ten blocks on the tables for the first tickets of the unit
  • Ask "how many hundreds, how many tens, how many ones?" for every number
  • Point to a zero and ask what place it holds
  • Have students read each expanded form aloud as a number
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.NBT.B.2a See a group of ten ones as one unit called a ten.
  • 1.NBT.B.2c Know that 10, 20, 30 and so on up to 90 mean 1 to 9 tens with no ones.
  • 2.NBT.A.1a See ten tens grouped together as one unit called a hundred.
  • 2.NBT.A.1b Know that 100, 200 and so on up to 900 mean 1 to 9 hundreds with no tens or ones.
  • 2.NBT.A.2 Count up to 1,000, and count by fives, tens and hundreds.
  • 2.NBT.A.3 Read and write numbers up to 1,000 as digits, in words, and in expanded form (like 300 + 40 + 7).
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
