How to Use This Pack

Seven pages for one unit on telling time. Page 1 is a pre-check to give before the unit, on the 1st grade time it builds on: the two hands, hours and half hours, counting by 5s and 1 hour later. Pages 2 and 3 are a review to do together before the test. Pages 4 and 5 are the unit test, Form A. Pages 6 and 7 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different times, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day of the unit and sort the class by what they missed. Do the review the day before the test, going over each question together. Questions 10 to 12 (time to the minute, how much time passed, and the time facts) are taught in 2nd grade in some states only: leave out the ones your class does not learn and score out of what is left. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school, or Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to point to the short hand first and say the hour, then count the long hand by 5s.

Tips for Success

  • Have students read the short hand first: it tells the hour
  • Count the minutes by 5s round the clock, starting at the 12
  • Near the end of an hour the short hand is close to the next number, but it is still the same hour
  • A clock with gears, where the short hand moves as the long hand turns, helps students check their drawings
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.NBT.A.2 Count up to 1,000, and count by fives, tens and hundreds.
  • 2.MD.C.7 Read and record clock times in 5-minute steps on clock faces and digital displays, and use a.m. and p.m. correctly.
  • 3.MD.A.1 Read and record time to the exact minute, find how many minutes pass between times, and solve story problems adding or subtracting minutes.
