How to Use This Pack

Six pages that take a clock apart. Page 1 is a large clock face with empty boxes where the numbers go: 12, 3, 6 and 9 are printed, and students write the rest. Page 2 has the numbers and a ring of circles outside the rim for the minutes: 00 is printed, and students count by fives to 55. Page 3 puts both together, hours in the squares and minutes in the circles. Page 4 shades the half of the clock past the hour and labels each five minutes, with o'clock printed and the rest (5 past, quarter past, half past, 25 to, quarter to, ...) from a word bank. Page 5 labels the parts of a clock with arrows and asks four questions about them, and page 6 writes the number words one to twelve on a clock.

In the Classroom

Use page 1 or 3 as a quick check before a telling-time unit: it shows right away who knows where the numbers sit. With page 2, point to each number and count by fives together, then let students fill in the circles. Page 4 is a good reference to keep in a folder once it is checked.

At Home

Look at a clock at home and count the minutes by fives together, from the 12 all the way around. Ask your child to point to the hour hand, the minute hand and, if there is one, the second hand.

Tips for Success

  • Write 12, 3, 6 and 9 first, then the numbers between them
  • Each number on the clock is 5 more minutes: count 5, 10, 15, ...
  • On the right half the minute hand is past the hour; on the left half it is counting to the next hour
  • Quarter past is 15 minutes, half past is 30, quarter to is 45
