How to Use This Pack

Five lessons, twenty-two worksheet pages, in the order to teach them: regrouping the ones, regrouping twice, crossing a hundred and reaching 1,000, friendly numbers, and word problems. Every lesson starts with a page of think-first questions, teaches with a worked example and models, gives guided and mixed practice, and ends with explaining, finding mistakes and making problems up. Each lesson has its own answer keys and two pages of teacher notes.

In the Classroom

Plan about one lesson a day or two, with base-ten blocks on hand for the first three. The think-first page makes a good warm-up for the whole class. The teacher notes for each lesson give the launch, what to teach, the misconceptions to expect, what to look for and ideas for support and extension.

At Home

Work through one lesson at a time. Before each sum, ask your child to estimate or to say which places will trade; after it, ask how they know the answer makes sense.

Tips for Success

  • Estimate before you add
  • Ones first, then tens, then hundreds
  • Write each new unit in the place it moves to
  • Look for a friendly hundred when a number is close
  • Read stories twice before solving

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
  • 2.NBT.A.1a See ten tens grouped together as one unit called a hundred.
  • 2.NBT.A.1b Know that 100, 200 and so on up to 900 mean 1 to 9 hundreds with no tens or ones.
  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Tell why an adding or subtracting method gives the right answer, reasoning from place value and number properties.
  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step story problems with +, −, × and ÷, using a letter for the missing amount, and check answers by estimating or rounding.
  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
  • 3.NBT.A.2 Add and subtract to 1,000 fluently using place-value strategies and written methods, properties of addition, and fact-family relationships.
