How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on money and financial literacy, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: the 2nd grade coins and bills, counting by 25s and 10s, adding and subtracting within 100, and spend, save or share. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet say what each coin is worth or count coins needs play coins in hand for the first lessons, and one who misses counting by 25s and 10s needs it before counting quarters and dimes on to a total. Nothing on the page mixes bills and coins or makes change yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: count the coins in a pocket or a jar together, and talk about whether money is for spending now, saving or giving.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep play coins and bills out for a student who missed the counting
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

3rd Grade Money and Financial Literacy Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on money and financial literacy, on what it builds on. Students write what each coin is worth, count coins and bills, add and subtract within 100, count by 25s and 10s, and tell spending from saving and sharing.
