How to Use This Pack

Eight exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 3rd grade unit on place value, rounding and estimating, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Tickets 5.2, 5.3, 5.4 and 5.8 are for the states that teach thousands and rounding to the nearest thousand in 3rd grade; skip them if your class does not. The unit test is a separate pack, and no ticket asks one of its problems.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child which two tens or hundreds a number is between, and which one it is closer to.

Tips for Success

  • Draw a number line on the board for the rounding tickets
  • Ask "which two hundreds is it between?" before every rounding
  • Remind students that a number exactly halfway rounds up
  • Have students say whether an answer is close to its estimate
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.NBT.A.1a See ten tens grouped together as one unit called a hundred.
  • 2.NBT.A.1b Know that 100, 200 and so on up to 900 mean 1 to 9 hundreds with no tens or ones.
  • 2.NBT.A.3 Read and write numbers up to 1,000 as digits, in words, and in expanded form (like 300 + 40 + 7).
  • 2.NBT.A.4 Compare three-digit numbers by looking at the value of each place, and record the result with >, = or <.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
  • 4.NBT.A.2 Read and write whole numbers to a million in digits, words and expanded form, and compare them by place value using >, = or <.
  • 4.NBT.A.3 Round whole numbers up to a million to any place, such as the nearest thousand or ten thousand, by thinking about place value.
