Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Find the value of a digit, and write numbers in expanded form and from words
  • Round to the nearest ten and to the nearest hundred, on a number line and without one
  • Halfway numbers such as 785 and 650, and numbers that round up into the next place
  • Estimate a sum and a difference, and use an estimate to check an answer
  • The last four questions (thousands in base-ten blocks, comparing four-digit numbers, one number shown many ways, and rounding to the nearest thousand) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on place value, rounding and estimating. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 9 to 12 (thousands, comparing four-digit numbers, one number many ways, rounding to the nearest thousand) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 1, 2, 4, 6 and 12 have three parts each: give the point when all three are right, or score them by the part if you like. Questions 9 to 12 are taught in 3rd grade in some states: leave out the ones your class does not learn and score out of what is left. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child which two tens or hundreds a number is between, and which one it is closer to.

Tips for Success

  • Ask "which two hundreds is it between?" before every rounding
  • Point to the halfway mark on each number line
  • Remind students that a number exactly halfway rounds up
  • Have students say whether an answer is close to its estimate
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.NBT.A.1a See ten tens grouped together as one unit called a hundred.
  • 2.NBT.A.1b Know that 100, 200 and so on up to 900 mean 1 to 9 hundreds with no tens or ones.
  • 2.NBT.A.3 Read and write numbers up to 1,000 as digits, in words, and in expanded form (like 300 + 40 + 7).
  • 2.NBT.A.4 Compare three-digit numbers by looking at the value of each place, and record the result with >, = or <.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
  • 4.NBT.A.2 Read and write whole numbers to a million in digits, words and expanded form, and compare them by place value using >, = or <.
  • 4.NBT.A.3 Round whole numbers up to a million to any place, such as the nearest thousand or ten thousand, by thinking about place value.

3rd Grade Place Value and Rounding Test

The unit test on place value, rounding and estimating, in two forms. Students find the value of a digit, round to the nearest ten and hundred with and without a number line, estimate sums and differences, and check whether an answer is reasonable.
