How to Use This Pack

The unit test for the time, mass and liquid volume unit of 3rd grade. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different times, things and numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 13 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 11 to 13 (ounces or pounds and cups or gallons, the thermometer, and the tool and unit for a job) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 11 to 13 are taught in 3rd grade in some states only: a class that follows the Common Core can stop after question 10 and score out of 10. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Read the kitchen clock together at odd times like 4:37, weigh fruit on a kitchen scale, and look for grams, kilograms and liters on food labels.

Tips for Success

  • On the number line, jump to the next quarter hour first, then by 15s
  • Count the ticks between the numbers on a scale or jug before reading it
  • A paper clip is about 1 gram and a liter bottle of water is about 1 kilogram
  • Go over the unit review the day before the test
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.MD.C.7 Read and record clock times in 5-minute steps on clock faces and digital displays, and use a.m. and p.m. correctly.
  • 3.MD.A.1 Read and record time to the exact minute, find how many minutes pass between times, and solve story problems adding or subtracting minutes.
  • 3.MD.A.2 Estimate and measure mass in grams and kilograms and liquid volume in liters, and solve one-step story problems about them with any operation.
  • 3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to the nearest half or quarter inch and show the measurements on a line plot marked in wholes, halves or quarters.
  • 4.MD.A.1 Know how units within one system compare, rewrite a measurement in a smaller unit, and make two-column conversion tables, like yards to feet.
